Meet Ryan: A Passion for Custom homes and renovations
The Early years of home renovations
Ryan’s love for renovations began early and has remained a lifelong passion. From a young age, he was drawn to hands-on work; for instance, he often helped his dad around the house—improving, fixing, building, and learning the value of craftsmanship. As he gained more experience, his skills naturally evolved. By the age of ten, he was already creating wooden crafts and gifts. Eventually, he progressed to more ambitious projects, such as wood turnings and shelving units, which he proudly sold at local fairs and flea markets. Through these formative experiences, Ryan not only honed his abilities but also developed a deep appreciation for quality workmanship.
The Beginning
At just 16, Ryan’s skills caught the attention of a local contractor, who offered him a job solely based on his work—no interview required. Within a week, Ryan was working on cabinet installations for custom homes, marking the early stages of his career in home renovations.
Into The Trades
Over the next six years, Ryan diligently honed his skills by collaborating with local experts across a variety of fields. Specifically, he gained hands-on experience in everything from custom home builds and cabinet shops to siding, roofing, and heavy steel and concrete construction. As a result, this broad exposure not only deepened his technical knowledge but also provided him with invaluable insight into the intricacies of both home renovations and large-scale projects. Consequently, he developed a well-rounded understanding that continues to inform his work today.
School
In 1996, Ryan embarked on an apprenticeship in cabinetmaking. However, upon the recommendation of his instructor, he switched to carpentry—a decision that set him on a path to mastery. By 2001, Ryan earned his Red Seal certificate in Carpentry and began working with some of Prince Edward Island’s most skilled and respected contractors. He tackled high-end custom homes along with various home renovations, such as intricate cement-forming jobs, and agricultural builds for multi-million-dollar dairy farms. These projects expanded his expertise and solidified his reputation for delivering exceptional work.
The Leap
In 2005, with PEI’s building industry slowed by the recession, Ryan headed west to Alberta, where the booming construction scene welcomed him with three job offers in his first week. Starting as a lead hand framer on multi- and single-family developments, Ryan eventually moved to Calgary in 2006. There, he launched his own company, Red Isle Construction and Consulting, which later became Red Isle Home Renovations in 2022 to reflect a fresh focus.
